The problem with Hollywood is that everyone wants to be famous. The problem with Wall Street is that everyone wants to be rich. The problem with Washington is that everyone wants to be powerful. The problem with career ladders is there is never a point at which you say ‘Well, I’ve arrived. I’ve done it.’ There is always more to achieve. And it’s not healthy to focus on yourself all the time. Nothing makes that ‘I’m on my hustle, grinding 24/7’ mentality seem sillier than a national disaster. Or walking through a hospital; Situations where we can see firsthand how petty it is to want to be better than other people. But on the other hand if you reject a striving lifestyle it’s easy to end up feeling like you’ve wasted your potential.

There’s one answer in life: balance. Prioritizing your goals while at the same time realizing that your goals are really not that important in the scheme of things. I suck at balance. My goal for 2012 was to work as hard as I can to be successful. My goal going forward will be to work as hard as I can to be successful in living a balanced life and being a good person.
